Tim wins inaugural Britten scholarship

The blur of speed, the smell of burning rubber and the distinctive roar heard over the tarmac - they all make Tim Drinkwater weak at the knees.

The 26-year-old has been compared with the maverick genius of motorcycle design, John Britten - except it's more cars than motorbikes that rev this automotive student up.

Mr Drinkwater is the first recipient of the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic's John Britten Memorial Scholarship - the first scholarship in New Zealand to hold Mr Britten's name.

Mr Drinkwater, a student in automotive engineering, was to receive his scholarship from Mr Britten's widow Kirsten but when she couldn't make it, Hamilton-based New Zealand superbike champion Andrew Stroud stepped in.

Saco fears rule may be nullified

Sac-Joaquin Section commissioner Pete Saco said he's pleased with the section's 30-day transfer rule, but he's concerned the California Interscholastic Federation will nullify the rule if it approves a proposal at its May meeting.

It was one of several issues that Saco discussed during a luncheon with members of the media on Monday.

"We're going to be going backwards (if we) go to a hardship rule," Saco said.

The section's rule, which went into effect this season, states that student-athletes who transfer from one school to another must sit out the first 30 days of the season. Exceptions are a bona fide change of address, divorce, child protective custody or a court order.

Saco said the proposal will make student-athletes prove a hardship or they'll miss an entire season.

Glotfelty Recognized as Nevada Professor of the Year for ...

University of Nevada, Reno English professor Cheryll Glotfelty was selected as the 2006 Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching Nevada Professor of the Year. Glotfelty was recognized at an awards luncheon, Nov. 16 in Washington, DC.

"It is extremely gratifying the College of Liberal Arts and the English department for Cheryll to be recognized for her academic scholarship and ability to inspire students," said Heather Hardy, dean. "Cheryll's work reflects cutting-edge research and artistic expression, which promotes the value of a liberal arts education on a national level."

Glotfelty contributed to the creation of the nation's first graduate program of study in literature and environment. "The award focuses on undergraduate teaching. Among Cheryll's most visible contributions are her extensive teaching in the core curriculum and creation of new capstone courses in her research fields," said Stacy Burton, English chair.

Jim Harbaugh to become Stanford coach

Stanford hired former NFL quarterback Jim Harbaugh on Monday to take over its struggling football program.

Harbaugh had spent the last three years as head coach at the University of San Diego, a non-scholarship Division I-AA program. He led the Toreros to a 29-6 record, winning 27 of his final 29 games at San Diego.

The school planned to formally introduce Harbaugh at a news conference Tuesday. Phone messages left for Harbaugh were not immediately returned.

Harbaugh has the tough task of turning around the Cardinal, who set a school record for losses in a 1-11 season this year that led to the firing of coach Walt Harris.

Stanford has won just 16 games in the past five seasons under Harris and Buddy Teevens, and have to struggled to compete in the Pac-10 since Tyrone Willingham left for Notre Dame following the 2001 season.
