Getting a little taste of the Hall
That blur on the floor is Decatur Eisenhower junior guard Lewis Jackson. He streaks up the basketball court, drops a spin move outside the 3-point line and cuts toward the basket to create for a teammate. Athleticism hasn't been questioned with Jackson, although recruiters and critics say there are unanswered concerns about his shooting ability and classroom work. Nevertheless, 5-foot-10 Jackson keeps getting more scholarship offers, including one from Illinois coach Bruce Weber. "I just picked up another one from Clemson,'' Jackson said Saturday after he led Eisenhower to a 51-43 victory over Central in a high school shootout at Assembly Hall. "I'm going to wait until after the season to make a decision. I will put it on hold so we can focus on making a run in March. "I don't want my recruitment to be a distraction.'' In a shootout that featured players committed to Illinois and more the Illini are watching, Jackson and Champaign Central junior guard Verdell Jones created the day's biggest buzz.

Stanford hires Harbaugh
UNDATED Stanford is handing off to a quarterback, hiring Jim Harbaugh to take over its struggling football program. The former N-F-L signal-caller has spent the last three years as head coach at the University of San Diego, a non-scholarship Division One-Double-A program. He led the Toreros to a 29-and-6 mark that included wins in 27 of his final 29 games. Harbaugh takes over a team that set a school record for losses this season, going 1-and-11 under Walt Harris. Bizman lauds body over N2.5m scholarship fund launch
A Port Harcourt based businessman, Mr Ita Uko has lauded the executive and members of Ikot Eboro Ikono Development Association, Uyo branch for launching a N2.5 scholarship fund for the education of youths of the area. Speaking in Uyo over the weekend as a special guest of honour at the scholarship fund laundi, Uko advised youths of the area to embrace education so as to benefit from the scholarship fund. Uko, who is the managing director of CITACON Nigeria Limited, an oil servicing company to Shell Petroleum Development Company, regretted that the community, despite being located within Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, had not made much progress due to lack of education among the majority of its people. It was on this premise that he charged indigenes of the community to contribute to the scheme so that in no distant time, the community can boast of at least one graduate from every home.
Can-do in Kalamazoo
A year ago, the Michigan town's schools were like those in many other Rust Belt cities, with declining enrollment, low test scores and a high dropout rate. Then anonymous donors announced the Kalamazoo Promise: a four-year scholarship to any of Michigan's public universities or colleges for local public school graduates. The amount of the scholarship is prorated depending on how long the student has lived in the district, but it amounts to at least 65% of tuition. .
Huskies take on 'unusual' opponent
Vance Walberg became Pepperdine's head coach in April and made confident proclamations at the start. The highly successful junior college and high school coach wanted the Waves in the NCAA Tournament by his second season. He wanted them to be a consistent Top 25 team by his third year. Happenings during the intervening eight months have changed the timetable considerably. "When I took the job, conditions looked favorable," said Walberg, whose Waves (3-9) take on No. 14 UConn (9-0) tonight at the Hartford Civic Center. "I was a lot more optimistic then. We're not giving up on anything. That's not my style, but we've had to readjust our expectations." Soon after Walberg took the job, three players transferred, unsure of their places in Walberg's up-tempo, shoot-at-all-costs style.
