Grant to help Young Scholars

UTICA - HSBC in the Community (USA) has awarded a $25,000 grant to Utica College to create the HSBC Endowed Scholarship for Underrepresented Students, to be awarded to students who have successfully completed the Young Scholars Liberty Partnerships Program and seek a higher education at Utica College.

The Young Scholars is a collaborative project between Utica College and the Utica City School District to meet the challenge of motivating underrepresented students in grades six through 12 to stay in school, earn a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation and pursue post-secondary education.

To date, 96 percent of the Young Scholars completing the program have graduated from high school; with 77 percent going on to enroll in institutions of higher education.

AmeriCorps alum starts scholarship

An AmeriCorps alumnus has contributed to Ross McGinnis' legacy by initiating the Keystone SMILES Ross McGinnis Memorial Scholarship.

The anonymous alum's donation of $5,000 established an endowment fund from which income will be used for future scholarships.

The first Ross McGinnis Community Service Scholarship will be given in 2007 to a student attending Keystone High School with succeeding scholarships designated for Clarion and Venango county youth eligible to apply.

The purpose of the scholarship, designated by the donor, specifies the recipient demonstrate unselfishness, commitment and support for their community and county.

Recipients selected will have demonstrated active citizenship and service to their community by volunteering time, fund-raising, donating or simply helping in any way they can to make a difference.


McKelvey Foundation Bronze Scholarship announced

Alfred State College has been selected as one of two New York State colleges approved for McKelvey Foundation Scholarship recipients.

The McKelvey Foundation has expanded its scholarship programs to include funding for students who have graduated from high school within the past three years to reconsider attending college or to re-enroll in college. The McKelvey Bronze Scholarship is designed to help students who are capable of succeeding in college, but lack the funds necessary to attend a state college.

A McKelvey Bronze Scholarship gives qualified students up to $4,000 for freshman year study, $5,000 for sophomore year, $6,000 for junior year, and $7,000 for senior year.

To be considered as a candidate for the McKelvey Bronze Scholarship, applicants must be accepted to Alfred State College or SUNY (State University of New York) Geneseo; have graduated from high school in 2003, 2004, or 2005 in one of the counties designated by the McKelvey Foundation as ruralAllegany, Cattaraugus, Livingston, Schuyler, Steuben, Wyoming, and Yates; live on campus with a roommate; complete 25 hours of community service each year; stay in contact with their assigned McKelvey Foundation field administrator; complete a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) each year; and seek additional scholarships at www.fastweb.com.
