Columnist signs off after cancer battle

POPULAR weekly newspaper columnist Michael Jeacock has died after battling cancer.

Mr Jeacock, 73, wrote regular columns in the News' sister papers, the Ely and Newmarket Weekly News and the Cambridge Town Crier.

His Views from the Fen columns attracted a loyal following of readers as well as critics who opposed his strong pro-hunting and country sports views.

He was born in Buxton, Derbyshire, and was the first child in his village to win a scholarship to Lady Manners' Grammar School in Bakewell.

His wife, Janet, said: "He would have gone on to Oxford University, but his family didn't have the money for him to go."

Instead, he trained as a journalist on the Derbyshire Times. National Service in the Army intervened. During his time in the Army he became part of the first intake at the Joint Services School for Linguists to learn Russian and train to be a spy.

Granholm signs pledges of students who say they'll go to college

LANSING -- Students at Lansing Eastern High School signed pledges Tuesday co-signed by Gov. Jennifer Granholm promising they'll go to college on the state's new Michigan Promise scholarship.

"If you don't go to college or get technical or vocational training, then you're not only hurting yourself, but you're hurting the state, too," Granholm told more than 40 students sitting around tables in the school library.

"As you consider where you're headed, consider that your own education is going to help to transform Michigan," she added. "We want you to accept ... the $4,000 that we are putting on the table in order for you to be able to go to college."

About 40 seniors signed the cards, along with a few juniors and sophomores.

Under the Michigan Promise, students who do well on statewide standardized tests will get $1,000 at the beginning of their freshman year and another $1,000 at the beginning of their sophomore year.

'Horses run past Rebels

SOUTH BURLINGTON -- Defending Division I high school boys basketball state champion Burlington High School unleashed its potent offense on South Burlington to post a 90-56 win Monday.

Senior Tyrone Conley collected 35 points, including five 3-pointers, as the Seahorses ran out to a 42-28 halftime lead.

Conley scored 14 points as part of a 33-15 third-period blitz to eliminate any thought of a Rebel comeback.

"We're just starting to click and playing well together," said Conley, who has accepted a basketball scholarship to attend the University of New Hampshire.

And click they did.

Coming off the bench to score in double digits for the Seahorses (5-0) were freshman Joe O'Shea (13 points), sophomore Clancy Rugg (11) and senior Brady Callahan (10).
