Scholarship Programs Could Aid Volunteerism
Our generation, as many may scathingly note, is notorious for its apathy. And while it is true that, since Sept. 11, 2001, our generation's rate of community service has surpassed that of our parents' generation, we are always capable of doing more. Unfortunately, the most mundane tasks prevent us from realizing this potential for greatness. I am certain that our generation is capable of changing our world for the better, but first our hearts must be stirred to rise up to the challenge. Mahatma Gandhi once said, “There are chords in every human heart. If we only knew how to strike the right chord, we would bring out the music." The music waiting to ring in each student is muffled because these cords are pulled too tightly to make a sound — we have work to do, and when there's time to spare we have social commitments There's extracurricular this, and full-time that — such is the life of the average Georgetown student.

The government's financial reforms and privatisation strategy had led to a vibrant trade sector that was empowering the consumer for the first time, he added. Through prudent economic management, first generation reforms of fiscal consolidation, debt reduction, deregulation, privatisation, and transparent governance, Pakistan's economy had grown at an average rate of almost 7 percent per annum during the last four years, he maintained.
Local student group gets national attention
Faculty sponsor Helen Howell has believed for years that the students in Martinsville's junior chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers are exemplary. As it turns out, the organization's national leaders agree. Last weekend, NSBE sent Dr. Grace Carroll, an educational consultant based in Oakland, Calif., to Martinsville to study the chapter, which Howell founded in 1999. Carroll plans to use the group's success as an example for clubs across the nation. “We felt it was important to look at stellar programs so people would be able to see what they're doing" and learn from them, Carroll said. “ ... Martinsville has made a name for themselves as consistently outstanding." Founded at Purdue University in 1971, NSBE is the nation's largest student-managed organization, according to its Web site.
