Scholarship For The Families of Fallen Soldiers

The Fallen Heroes Fund is now accepting applicants. It's a scholarship fund designed to help those who have suffered the loss of loved ones, killed in the line of duty.

Kathy Stocco, Executive Director of the Lubbock Area Foundation said, "The Fallen Heroes Fund is a scholarship fund we've started at the foundation for the dependent survivors of our service men and women and first responders who have been killed in the line of duty serving our country since September 11, 2001."

The Lubbock Area Foundation created this fund for those in need in this area.

"The scholarships are going to be set aside for families who have had some connection with the Lubbock area. Whether you live in Lubbock or not, those who have lost so much can benefit soon," Stocco said.

The scholarships will be available in the Spring of 2007.

A Kayne becomes a Cane

Carrie Pearson will try to hold back her tears amid cheers and celebration this afternoon when she watches her son complete a long journey and achieve his dream.

Today, her son, Kayne, will finally become a Cane.

''I've waited for this day for so long,'' said Kayne Farquharson, 22, a 6-2, 195-pound receiver out of El Camino (Calif.) Junior College and a four-star recruit by Rivals.com.

``I've always wanted to be a Hurricane. I had to wait and wait and wait. But I believe I'm a good reason why people always say the best things come to those who wait.''

Farquharson will become the first player to sign with the University of Miami as part of its 2007 class. Today is the first day junior college players and early high school graduates can officially sign letters-of-intent.

Pressures of Celebrity

The pressures of competing and suddenly being thrust into the national spotlight can be too much for some girls. Organizers behind a local scholarship program say it's something they warn their contestants about.

The walls inside the America's Junior Miss headquarters read like a Who's Who in the community.

From the very first Junior Miss, to those who followed her, the women were held to a high standard.

Becky Jo Peterson says former Junior Miss contestants have gone on to do great things despite pressures of celebrity. Pressures she says may have gotten to the current Miss USA, Tara Conner. Conner is accused of underage drinking, using drugs, and missing appearances.
Despite those allegations, she will keep her crown and check in to rehab.

Students of Inner-City Schools Receive Stipends Under Security ...

Junior Minister in the Ministry of National Security, Dr. Donald Rhodd, has said that the Government would continue its preventative action against all levels of crimes perpetrated against and by youths in inner-city communities.

Dr. Rhodd, who was addressing an awards luncheon for participants in the Ministry's Safety and Security Scholarship Programme at the Knutsford Court Hotel today (Nov. 30), said the government was aware of the eminent threats from "the narcotrade, gun runnings and money laundering, which seek to exploit communities which are economically as well as socially vulnerable".
Seven beneficiaries from inner-city communities each received $15,000 stipends at today's awards luncheon.

The State Minister said the initiative was timely and appropriate, especially in the context where research data had estimated that there were some 160,000 unattached youth, "meaning that they are not in school, they are not in any training institution, employed or seeking employment".
