Stanford hires Harbaugh
UNDATED Stanford is handing off to a quarterback, hiring Jim Harbaugh to take over its struggling football program. The former N-F-L signal-caller has spent the last three years as head coach at the University of San Diego, a non-scholarship Division One-Double-A program. He led the Toreros to a 29-and-6 mark that included wins in 27 of his final 29 games. Harbaugh takes over a team that set a school record for losses this season, going 1-and-11 under Walt Harris. Perdue seeks to shield HOPE scholarship
ATHENS - Gov. Sonny Perdue urged lawmakers Tuesday to try again to pass a proposed constitutional amendment to eliminate the possibility that lottery funds could be used for political pork. Perdue's HOPE Chest amendment failed during the 2006 election-year session, in part because Democrats didn't want the Republican governor to get credit for passing legislation to protect the HOPE college scholarships. They said Perdue opposed legislation to create the highly popular scholarship in the 1990s when he was a state senator. But Tuesday, during one of his first public speeches since winning re-election Nov. 7, the governor called on legislators to reconsider the measure during the 2007 session. Under HOPE Chest, lottery funds could only go to pay for HOPE scholarships, prekindergarten classes and reserves to pay for those programs in the future.
