Be aware of scholarship, admissions deadlines
This is the time that high school seniors need to know the application deadlines for college admissions and financial aid. The Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority or KHEAA and The Student Loan People have set out some tips for students: If a student hasn't picked a school, narrow the list by visiting the colleges, talking to students and your parents. Compare schools and take virtual campus tours at www.GoHigherKY.org. If planning to go through the early decision process, which means choosing a school in the fall, then most schools request the applications be submitted during this time of year. If choosing the regular admission process, now is the time to talk to teachers about writing recommendations and admissions essay, if one is required.
New scholarship helps refugees attend college
A new scholarship is helping 11 area students with refugee or asylum status study at Champlain College in Burlington. The New American Student Scholarship helps students with tuition at the private, professionally focused college. Recipient Hau Le, a freshman from Burlington, has set his sights on a career in criminal forensic psychology. "Since I was young I've done counseling for my friends," Le said. "They say I read people well. Law is very important to me and I want to help people out." Born in Vietnam, Le is the first in his immediate family to go to college. His mother is a manicurist who was born in South Vietnam to an American father. "It's not safe for her to live there because of anti-American discrimination. It's also a communist country so there aren't many opportunities there." After resettling in the United States, Le worked his way through Burlington public schools.

She is the first woman from UGA to receive the scholarship and the fifth UGA student to ever receive it, according to a news release. Narain is majoring in international affairs and economics. She will study for two years in the United Kingdom beginning in October. "For the subjects I want to study, some of the best programs in the world are located in the UK," Narain wrote in an e-mail. "The London School of Economics and the School of Oriental and African Studies (where she'll be studying) are some of the best universities in the world, especially in terms of studying economics in the Middle East and developing world in general." The Marshall Scholarship, given out by the British Parliament, is considered one of the highest academic honors an American student can receive, according to a news release.
Dooley Named Louisiana Tech Head Coach
RUSTON, La. -- Derek Dooley, son of former Georgia football coach and athletic director Vince Dooley, was hired by Louisiana Tech on Monday, school president Dr. Dan Reneau said. Dooley served as an assistant coach for the Miami Dolphins the past two years. "From the very first time I met Derek Dooley when we went to Miami, I was super impressed," Reneau said. "He is a man of integrity, character and high intelligence. He knows coaching from one end to the other. It's a new day for Louisiana Tech, and Derek Dooley is the man we need to lead us into this era of success." Dooley, who will continue his responsibilities as the Dolphins tight ends coach through the end of the season, is very familiar with the college and high school football scene in the south after serving as an assistant coach at LSU under Nick Saban for five years and as the wide receivers coach at SMU from 1997 through 1999.
