HHS holds induction for 37 outstanding teens

HAMMONTON -- Thirty-seven students from Hammonton High School were inducted into the school's chapter of the National Honor Society on Thursday.

Before a crowd of some 150 family members and friends, the new inductees were selected for their excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service and character.

"These kids have to have the complete package," principal Jim Donoghue said before Thursday's ceremony, which was held in the school's Performing Arts Center. "They have to have the scholarship to be eligible but they have to demonstrate through an extensive process how they can exemplify leadership and character and service. If you are deficient in any one area, you are not eligible. That's what makes these kids so special because they are well rounded."

Donoghue said the induction will also be a boost as the students set their sights on attending college in the next year or so.

Former Congressman gives $2 million for SMU scholarship fund

The Dallas Business Journal reports about Brady P. Gentry, a former member of Congress and judge. He lived a while back (was an infantryman in WWI), liked SMU a lot and died in 1966. His will stated a scholarship fund would be started in his name at SMU. The school just announced that it got the money a couple months ago.

The DMN explains why, although it's not the most clear of explanations. Not bad. But not great.

Couldn't find a photo of Mr. Gentry, although there is this pencil or ink sketch from here, which I like because it makes us look kind of like the Wall Street Journal. OK, carry on.

Rutgers pulls in another recruit

The spoils keep coming for Rutgers as the Scarlet Knights netted yet another impressive verbal commitment Sunday. Joseph Nicolas, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound safety, didn't even wait for his ride to the airport before telling Rutgers' coaches he'd like to accept their scholarship offer.

Golf tourney to set up scholarship fund

The Gilbert community, along with friends from across the country, will honor Ken Vandehei's life Saturday during the first golf fund-raiser for the scholarship that has been named after him.

Vandehei, 48, was killed July 30 when he was struck by lightning while vacationing with his family at Lake Powell.

His family established the Ken Vandehei Scholarship Fund, which is managed by the Higley Education Foundation and will be awarded annually to outstanding seniors in Higley Unified schools interested in pursuing careers in aviation, construction or business. .

AU men roll over Tennessee State

It only took one smooth sequence in the first half of Tuesday's game for Quan Prowell to show why Auburn head coach Jeff Lebo has been so anxious to get him onto the floor.

The junior forward dove toward the lane, pulled in a pass from Josh Dollard, knocked a Tennessee State defender down and finished with a layup.

Five minutes later, Prowell picked up his second foul of the first half and headed to the bench at halftime.

It was that kind of game for Prowell, whose AU debut was alternately brilliant and frustrating.

But for Prowell and the rest of the Tigers, much more went right than went wrong. AU cruised to an 86-59 win against Tennessee State, its most dominant win in a month.

Prowell, who was suspended the first 11 games of the season, finished with 6 points in nine minutes before fouling out.
