North senior earns scholarship
GROSSE POINTE WOODS — From the time Grosse Pointe North senior Robbie Fisher ran the soles out of his first pair of running shoes at the age of 3, the cross county standout has been setting the pace. "He used to run constantly," Fisher’s mom, Janet, said of her son’s younger years. "He’s put his heart and soul into it." Fisher’s passion for running has earned him a cross country scholarship to Miami University (Ohio). He signed a letter of intent Nov. 13 at North to seal the deal. "The visit went really well," Fisher said. "The guys were great, and, academically and athletically, I feel like it was a perfect fit for me. I knew when I found the right school, I would just know it." According to those who know Fisher best, the RedHawks’ cross country family should be more than happy with the résumé he’s bringing with him to Ohio.
EIU graduate has come a long way from begging on the streets in ...
CHARLESTON -- Eastern Illinois University graduate Hopeton Dias has come a long way from begging as a child on the streets of Kingston, Jamaica, and he is still going."Eastern has done the second leg of the relay my life is running," said Dias, who donned cap and gown Saturday for EIU's commencement ceremony. The sociology and pre-law graduate hopes to attend law school in California next.Dias, 26, said he was born in the Kingston ghetto to a single mother with several children. Dias said, as a child, he decided to seek an education because this would provide a way out of the Kingston ghetto and the daily struggles for survival there. To earn money for food and school, Dias said he begged and danced in the streets. He later worked at a supermarket. Dias said he was honest about his financial needs, his goals and his good grades in school with everyone he met.
Stanford hires Harbaugh
UNDATED Stanford is handing off to a quarterback, hiring Jim Harbaugh to take over its struggling football program. The former N-F-L signal-caller has spent the last three years as head coach at the University of San Diego, a non-scholarship Division One-Double-A program. He led the Toreros to a 29-and-6 mark that included wins in 27 of his final 29 games. Harbaugh takes over a team that set a school record for losses this season, going 1-and-11 under Walt Harris. The Cardinal have won just 16 games in the past five seasons under Harris and Buddy Teevens. Copyright 2006 Associated Press. All rights reserved. Donors let gift speak for itself
Brown, who announced the scholarship program 13 months ago, is the only person in Kalamazoo who has publicly acknowledged that she knows the identities of the anonymous donors. It's a secret she hasn't shared with any of her staff or anyone in the community, she said. Even her husband ``doesn't know the whole story.'' Her secrecy is fine with community leaders. ``Some of the national media have tried to find out about the donors, and people here don't want to talk about it,'' said Ron Kitchens, executive director of Southwest Michigan First, the region's economic-development agency. ``They're willing to accept the generosity in the light in which it was given.'' There's also consensus that the anonymity may be one of the best pluses of the program.
