Grant to help Young Scholars

UTICA - HSBC in the Community (USA) has awarded a $25,000 grant to Utica College to create the HSBC Endowed Scholarship for Underrepresented Students, to be awarded to students who have successfully completed the Young Scholars Liberty Partnerships Program and seek a higher education at Utica College.

The Young Scholars is a collaborative project between Utica College and the Utica City School District to meet the challenge of motivating underrepresented students in grades six through 12 to stay in school, earn a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation and pursue post-secondary education.

To date, 96 percent of the Young Scholars completing the program have graduated from high school; with 77 percent going on to enroll in institutions of higher education.

MSU recruit jailed for five days

STARKVILLE — Copiah-Lincoln Community College defensive tackle Jessie Bowman, who has committed to sign with Mississippi State, is spending this week in the Lincoln County jail after pleading guilty to misdemeanor charges of trespassing and simple assault.

Bowman was given a five-day jail term on Friday stemming from a July 3 altercation. Bowman was initially charged with a felony count of burglary, but District Attorney Dee Bates reduced that to the trespassing misdemeanor.

It's unclear when and where Bowman, who gave a non-binding, oral commitment to MSU coaches last Thursday, would sign his letter of intent. Today is the first day junior college players can sign binding scholarship papers.

"He may just sign it in the jail right now, I don't know," Bowman's attorney, Joe Fernald, said.

Last chance saloon at Hardenhuish Park

DARREN Perrin has told his underachieving players they have the Christmas fixtures to save their Chippenham Town careers.

The Bluebirds boss was so incensed with the 3-0 defeat at Cheshunt on Saturday he dragged his players in for extra training on Monday.

"Some of them have been told they are in the last chance saloon," he said ahead of Halesowen's visit to Hardenhuish Park on Saturday.

"I feel Adie (Mings, assistant manager) and I have been fair but the time has come to change things.

"After two league wins we thought we had got back to where we want to be but Saturday's performance was abject and certain players have been told that."

Perrin revealed he is tracking two more players, following the capture of utility man Yan Klukowski while he is on his Christmas break from a football scholarship in the US.
